Why no spotify
I used to use spotify but I no longer think it actually makes sense, The value of spotify actually changes drastically - If we take this as a simple example lets say you start using spotify at £10 a month and you use it to listen to 10 songs per month because you happen to only like 10 songs - you’ve decided that the conveiniance of spotify is worth approx £1 per song it makes conveiniant - however spotify routinely removes music and if you’re like me you end up fractured, listening to some music on spotify some on youtube as both become increasingly inconveiniant at a certain point piracy becomes more conveiniant and a better experiance

ipod classic
I did briefly try to use plexamp but ran into issues mainly I have two phones (iphone 13 mini, pixel 5 w/ grapheneOS) but in both cases I listen to music a lot so battery drain got very annoying very quickly, I decided a dedicated music player was a must and I had an ipod classic (5.5) so I figured breathing some new life into it would be good, as it turns out theres a huge community dedicated to modding ipod classics.
iflash
A major weakpoint of ipod classics is the use of mechanical drives, for a portable device this won’t last long the iflash board lets you use SD cards instead of mechanical drives, you can also expand the storage to be several TBs but since I’m not some flac loser I’m fine with 120GB
Battery
ipod classics have a default battery of 300mah, I’ve upgraded to 3000mah (benchmarks pending)
Rockbox
Rockbox is custom software that looks a hell of a lot nicer and works better than the stock ipod shit I also use this theme
Desktop
On desktop I maintain the same songs and the same playlists I made a basic shell script to convert to/from my ipod paths to my desktops paths then as a palyer I just use clementine.
